Question: I'm a college freshman and am pursuing a major in archeology. I haven’t had a lot of help with it because it is very uncommon. I need a contact with an archeologist so I can get a feel of what I’m going to do.
Answer:

Careerzing's contacts at Arizona State University recommend a helpful website for great information on archaeology: ArchNet WWW Virtual Library of Archaeology hosted by the Archaeological Research Institute at Arizona State University (ArchNet). It has answers to a lot of questions you may have about the field.

Careerzing also contacted Deanna Baker, Education & Outreach Coordinator at Archaeological Institute of America in Boston, Mass. Here is her response to your question:

"My best advice (and what I did when I was in high school) is to find a major university close to the student that has an anthropology/archaeology department. Find a professor in the department that has similar research interests as the students and then email him/her some questions. In my past experience, professors have been very willing to help out and answer questions."

Deanna can be reached at dbaker@aia.bu.edu. The Institute's website location is: www.archaeological.org. Their site is very extensive and informative!

Another idea is to go onto Linkedin and do a search for archaeologists. To do this, you need to go to the “Advanced Search Option” in the upper right hand corner of the linkedin homepage. You can contact professionals in the field and ask to link to them. Most professionals are very pleased to entertain questions or give career advice to eager, interested students. Please exercise common sense and caution when contacting people you don’t know.
