Explore Being an Apiarist with Jerry Hayes

cz:Briefly describe your job.

My Official title is Chief, Apiary Section, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

The State of Florida recognized years ago the importance of honey bees for agricultural production of honey but more importantly for pollination/production of the billions of dollars worth of Florida fruits and vegetables.

The Apiary Section has a staff of 14 Apiary Field Inspectors and African Bee ID Lab and support staff. Our assignment is to help beekeepers be more successful which entails regulatory pest, parasite and disease oversight, special inspections for shipping of honey bee colonies to other states, honey certification and monitoring an extensive research commitment. We have approximately 1700 registered beekeepers in the state representing 250,000 colonies that require our attention daily.

I was hired by the Agronomy Department, University of Florida, to do research in plant breeding methods and to teach a graduate course entitled "The Genetic Basis of Plant Improvement". I took over a field corn breeding project and initiated a legume breeding project (alfalfa and white clover). I started as an assistant professor and eventually reached the full professor rank.

Explore Being an Agriculture/Environmental Consultant with David Legg

cz:Briefly describe your job.

Until 2005 I worked for the United States Department of Agriculture – Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). I was responsible for all agency programs in south Florida, operated ten offices and supervised thirty-seven employees. The agency develops partnerships with local, state and other federal agencies and implements cost share programs to improve the natural resources on private lands. I used my training and expertise to retire early and begin a second career as a consultant.

Since retirement I am an Agriculture/Environmental consultant specializing in Best Management Practice (BMPs) implementation. I am under contract to develop and operate a state cost share program that provides incentive money to improve farm water quality for the nursery industry in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Currently I have in excess of sixty clients.
